Mateo Coronel was the man of the moment in matchday eight, scoring the only goal as Club Queretaro won away at Club Tijuana (0-1) in the early hours of Saturday on the Mexican border.
The forward struck in the 30th minute after a pass from Santiago Homenchenko, settling a game in which Queretaro barely had the ball. Coach E. Gonzalez fielded G. Allison in goal, with B. Duarte, D. Reyes, L. Abascia and D. Parra across the back, and Carlo Adriano, Homenchenko, E. Gimenez, Coronel, Paulo Victor and A. Avila ahead of them.
The goal that settled it
According to the official match data, Queretaro sat back with just 37% possession against Tijuana's 63% and struck on the break: Homenchenko slipped in Coronel, who finished coolly to make it 0-1 in the 30th minute.
The hosts pushed back hard, firing 24 shots to Queretaro's eight, though only four attempts from each side tested the goalkeepers. Allison made three saves to protect the narrow lead until the final whistle.
Changes and cards
Gonzalez made five substitutions: Carlos Villanueva replaced Paulo Victor in the 62nd minute, Iker Benito Sanchez came on for Bayron Duarte in the 75th, Alejandro Alcala Solorio took over from Mateo Coronel in the 85th, and a double change in the 86th brought on Bernardo Parra and Erik Duenas.
